OsteoMAP

OsteoMAP - for patients living with life-limiting persistent pain

OsteoMAP is an innovative 6 week treatment programme that integrates Osteopathy with Mindfulness and Acceptance based approaches to pain.

Funded for research by the Department of Health in 2013, the course has been developed for adults suffering with significant, persistent, life limiting musculo-skeletal pain, who are ready to explore new possibilities and live a more fulfilling life, despite ongoing symptoms.

The course is based on a collaborative approach between the osteopath and patient for an hour per week for 6 weeks and aims to help patients develop mindfulness-based self care to help manage their pain and discomfort more effectively and to help them live closer to a life that they love.

So what is mindfulness?

Mindfulness can be described as simply “noticing what's happening right now” - consciously becoming aware of all our internal thoughts, feelings and sensations in the present moment, without trying to change or control them.

Many of us live life on auto-pilot and do things out of habit and although this works well in many situations it can also limit opportunities to choose different responses.

Mindfulness meditation is part of Buddhist tradition but is now being used in a non-religious way in many healthcare programmes to help people develop body and self-awareness.

In OsteoMAP, mindfulness and mindful movement exercises are adapted to meet the physical capabilities and goals of each patient, and no-one is asked to do anything they feel uncomfortable with.
